Puerto Rican Yankee Can’t Break His Reggaeton Roots

Mundial is a shout to the world from reggaeton superstar Daddy Yankee, but, if the world noticed, it doesn’t seem overly concerned. The headliner of the album, “Grito Mundial,” was supposed to be the official anthem of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, though it was recently dropped in favor of K’Naan’s “Wavin’ Flag.” Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez (Daddy Yankee) said that this album was meant to incorporate new sounds from his encounters while traveling on tour. Perhaps the compilation offers some new sounds here and there, but, for the most part, Daddy Yankee’s Mundial is the same blood-pumping, rhythmic experience the world has come to expect from Ayala.
